Dune: Awakening runs on Unreal Engine 5, which means it looks stunning and also means it can absolutely destroy your frame rate if you leave everything on defaults. Most players open the game, see an auto-detected preset, assume it is fine, and then spend two hours wondering why the frame rate is inconsistent near every outpost and trade hub.
This guide skips the graphic tour and goes straight to what matters: getting stable frames, removing the stutter, and making sure your inputs actually register when they should. There are also specific sections for the RTX 4050 and GTX 1660, since those two GPUs come up constantly in Dune performance threads and they need very different approaches.
The game runs well on most mid-range setups with the right settings. The defaults are often not the right settings.
Best Settings Overview
Before going section by section, here is the short version for players who just want a working config and do not need the full explanation.
Display: run Fullscreen, native resolution, no V-Sync, FPS cap set to 5 below your monitor's refresh rate. Motion Blur off. Field of View at 90 or personal preference, keeping in mind that wider FOV costs frames.
Graphics: Global Illumination on Medium, Shadows on Low, Post Processing on Low, Textures on High if you have 8 GB VRAM or more, Reflections on Medium, View Distance on High, Effects Quality on High, Foliage on Medium. Lumen on if your GPU handles it. Everything else can stay at default or Medium.
Upscaling: DLSS Balanced for Nvidia users, FSR 3.1 Balanced for everyone else. Frame Generation on if your GPU supports it. Reflex on for Nvidia GPUs.
Those settings produce the best frame-to-quality ratio for the widest range of hardware. The sections below explain each one in more detail, including what to change on older or lower-end cards.
Best Graphics Settings
The Graphics tab in Dune: Awakening is where most of the performance lives. The Display settings matter too, but they do not move the needle as much as these do.
Global Illumination
This is the single most expensive setting in the game. Dune: Awakening uses Lumen, Unreal Engine 5's real-time global illumination system, which produces genuinely impressive lighting across Arrakis but carries a real cost. On high-end GPUs (RTX 4070 and above), set GI to High and enable Lumen. On mid-range cards (RTX 3060, RTX 4060, RTX 4050), set GI to Medium and leave Lumen off unless your frame rate target is already being hit. On older or lower-end hardware, GI on Low gives back a meaningful chunk of frames with a visual change that most players do not notice during active gameplay.
If you are hitting stutters specifically and are not sure where they come from, try lowering GI first. It is the most common culprit.
Shadow Quality
Shadows in Dune: Awakening are expensive and do not look dramatically different between High and Low in most outdoor environments, which is where most of the game takes place. Set this to Low as a baseline. If you have frames to spare after everything else is dialled in, bump to Medium. High and Ultra add detail in enclosed spaces and near bases, but the cost is not worth it for general play.
Textures
Textures are primarily VRAM-bound rather than GPU-bound. If you have 8 GB of VRAM, High is fine. If you have 10 GB or more, Ultra works. Drop to Medium if you see texture pop-in or if the game is stalling after fast movement, which usually means the VRAM is being filled faster than it can stream new assets. Do not set Textures higher than your VRAM comfortably allows. The performance hit from VRAM overflow is worse than what you save by running High instead of Medium.
Post Processing
Set this to Low. Post Processing handles ambient occlusion, bloom, and depth of field, and dropping from Ultra to Low gives around 8 percent more frames with very little visible change during actual gameplay. The loss at Low is mostly ambient occlusion quality in dark indoor areas. In open desert, you will not notice it at all.
Reflections, Effects, View Distance, Foliage
Reflections can sit at Medium. There are not many highly reflective surfaces in Dune: Awakening's environments, so the difference between Medium and Ultra is minimal. View Distance at High keeps geometry loading at a reasonable distance without the cost of Ultra. Effects Quality at High gives good particle and material detail without a significant frame rate penalty. Foliage at Medium is the right balance; Ultra foliage density in Dune's sandy environments does not add much given the art direction.
Low-End Laptop Mode
Skip this. The Low-End Laptop Mode drops all settings to Low and forces Ultra Performance upscaling at 33 percent internal resolution. The FPS boost is real, but the image quality becomes cartoonish and the upscaling artifacts are severe. Manually setting individual settings to Low gives a similar FPS result with much better image quality.
DLSS and FSR Settings
Dune: Awakening ships with DLSS 4, FSR 3.1, Intel XeSS 2, and Unreal's native TSR. Upscaling is not optional on this game if you care about frame rate. The question is which one to use and at what mode.
Which Upscaler to Use
Nvidia GPU owners should use DLSS. It produces the cleanest image of the four options, especially on moving targets and fine detail like character equipment. TSR is the second-best option and works on all hardware. FSR 3.1 and XeSS produce similar results, with XeSS handling thin geometry and cables slightly better. If you are on an AMD card, FSR 3.1 is the right pick. On Intel Arc, XeSS is the obvious choice.
One thing worth noting: some players have reported that switching from FSR or XeSS to TAA or DLSS fixed stuttering that the upscaler itself was causing. If you are seeing irregular frame timing and you are on FSR, try switching to TSR or DLSS and see if the stutter pattern changes. The upscaler is not always the problem, but it has been a common one.
Which Mode to Use
At 1080p, use Quality mode. This renders the game at 67 percent of output resolution and gives a good balance between frame rate gain and image sharpness. At 1440p, use Balanced (59 percent). At 4K, Performance mode (50 percent) is needed to hit playable frame rates on all but the highest-end GPUs.
Ultra Performance at 33 percent internal resolution is only usable at 4K on a very good monitor. At 1080p or 1440p, the image breaks down enough that it becomes distracting during movement.
Frame Generation
Frame Generation is available via DLSS 4 on RTX 40 series and newer, and via FSR 3.1 on all GPUs. The FSR-based Frame Generation path needs V-Sync enabled for stable frame pacing. DLSS Frame Generation does not require V-Sync and pairs better with Reflex for input latency control.
Frame Generation adds perceived input lag. In a survival MMO like Dune: Awakening, that lag is less noticeable than it would be in a fast-paced shooter, and the frame rate boost it provides, often doubling the visual frame count, is worth the tradeoff for most players. If you are doing a lot of combat and your reactions feel off after enabling it, turn it off and rely on native upscaling instead.
Reflex
Enable Reflex if you are on an Nvidia GPU. It reduces input lag at the driver level by synchronising the CPU and GPU workloads, which means the frames you are seeing more accurately represent the game state at the moment you pressed a key. The difference is real and measurable. There is no meaningful performance cost.
Best Settings for RTX 4050
The RTX 4050 is a laptop GPU with 6 GB of VRAM and performance that sits slightly below the desktop RTX 3060. It can run Dune: Awakening at 1080p at playable frame rates, but it needs the right settings to do it consistently, especially near populated bases where draw calls stack up.
Use these settings for a stable 60 FPS target at 1080p:
Global Illumination: Medium, Lumen off. Shadows: Low. Textures: Medium (6 GB VRAM fills up fast). Post Processing: Low. Reflections: Low. View Distance: Medium. Effects Quality: Medium. Foliage: Low. Upscaling: DLSS Quality. Frame Generation: off (the 4050 benefits more from the saved overhead than the added frames). Reflex: on.
With those settings, most players see 60 to 75 FPS in open desert environments. Near trade hubs and player bases, drops into the 45 to 55 range are common. This is partly a CPU bottleneck issue. The 4050's performance is close enough to the recommended spec that the CPU, not the GPU, is often the limiting factor in busy areas.
A few things that specifically help the 4050: set your Windows power plan to High Performance, enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows graphics settings, and make sure XMP or EXPO memory profile is active in BIOS if your laptop supports it. These are outside-game changes that reduce CPU-side latency and help the GPU stay fed.
If you are still dropping below 50 FPS near bases after all that, switch DLSS from Quality to Balanced. That one change can recover 10 to 15 frames with a visual difference that is hard to spot at 1080p on a laptop screen.
Best Settings for GTX 1660
The GTX 1660 is minimum-spec territory for Dune: Awakening. It can run the game, but it needs more aggressive cuts than the 4050 does. There is also no DLSS support here, since DLSS requires Turing architecture with tensor cores. The GTX 1660 does not have them. Your upscaling options are FSR, TSR, or XeSS.
Use these settings for a 1080p experience that holds close to 60 FPS in open areas:

Frame Generation matters more on the GTX 1660 than on any other GPU in this guide. Without it, hitting 60 FPS in busy areas is genuinely difficult. With it, the visual frame count jumps enough to make the experience feel smooth even when the underlying render rate is in the 40s. The input lag addition is the tradeoff, but given the alternatives, it is the right call here.
One important driver note: there have been widespread issues with Nvidia drivers newer than 566.36 causing performance drops on non-RTX Nvidia cards in Dune: Awakening. If you are on the GTX 1660 and your frames are lower than expected, roll back your drivers to 566.36 and test again. Multiple players on Steam forums confirmed this made a significant difference specifically on older Nvidia hardware.

How to Fix Stuttering in Dune: Awakening

Save the file and restart the game. These settings pre-compile shaders more aggressively and cache them to disk, which removes most of the one-time stutter on first visits to new locations.
VRAM Overflow Stutter
If your Texture setting is higher than your VRAM can handle, the game starts streaming textures from system RAM, which causes irregular hitches. Lower your Texture setting by one step and test again. This type of stutter is usually more pronounced after fast movement or when loading into a new area.
Upscaler-Caused Stutter
This one surprised a lot of players. FSR and XeSS have caused stuttering on some systems in Dune: Awakening where switching to DLSS or TAA fixed it entirely. If you are on a non-RTX Nvidia card (GTX series) and your performance dropped after a driver update, roll back to version 566.36. There are ongoing reports of post-566.36 drivers causing frame rate issues specifically on older Nvidia hardware in this game. The fix is consistent enough across Steam community threads that it is worth trying before anything else on GTX cards.
How to Increase FPS in Dune: Awakening
Beyond the graphics settings, there are several Windows and system-level changes that help. These are not dramatic, but combined they add up to a noticeable improvement, particularly in CPU-limited scenarios like busy player hubs.
Set your Windows power plan to High Performance. Go to Control Panel, Power Options, and select High Performance. This stops Windows from throttling the CPU during load spikes.
Enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS). Go to Windows Settings, System, Display, Graphics, and turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. Disable Memory Integrity and Virtual Machine Platform if you do not use them. Both settings are in Windows Security and Windows Features respectively. They add overhead to every memory operation, which affects games running DX12 or Vulkan. Disabling them recovers a small but real percentage of performance, especially on older CPUs.
Make sure your RAM is running at its rated speed. If you have XMP or EXPO memory, go into BIOS and enable the profile.
