The Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 tournament at the Esports World Cup 2026 kicked off with six best-of-five series, and most of the sport's biggest names were in the building. Defending champions OpTic Gaming opened their title defense, while FaZe Esports, G2 Esports, 100 Thieves, Gentle Mates and Movistar KOI all looked to make a statement in Riyadh.

The scoreline says five of the six series ended in 3-0 sweeps, which sounds like a quiet opening day. It was not. Search and Destroy turned into the most chaotic mode on the schedule, producing multiple comebacks from three or four rounds down and at least one series-defining reversal. Only OpTic, the reigning champions, needed a fourth map to get the job done.

Movistar KOI Sweep Carolina Royal Ravens 3-0

Movistar KOI opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Carolina Royal Ravens, though Carolina made them work for it in the middle map.

Map 1: Hardpoint (Den)

KOI took control from the opening whistle, closing it out 250-132. The European side controlled rotations for most of the map and finished with a 102-85 kill edge, out-damaging Carolina 12,845 to 11,291. Kips led the way with 28 kills, CleanX added 27, and Insight anchored the objective with 117 seconds of hill time. Carolina's Traixx was the lone bright spot with 29 kills, but he had little help around him.

Map 2: Search & Destroy (Raid)

This one nearly flipped the series. Carolina raced out to a 4-1 lead and looked ready to force a fourth map. Instead, KOI won five of the next six rounds to steal it 6-5, the first of several late-round collapses that defined Day 1. Insight finished with a 9-6 K/D on the map, and Kips and CleanX kept producing. Carolina's Exceed put up 11 kills on his own, but it was not enough support to hold the lead.

Map 3: Overload

KOI closed things out with a clean, balanced win. Kips again led with 25 kills, CleanX added 24, and Abe chipped in 23. Every KOI player finished the map with a positive K/D.

Match MVP: Kips. Kips took the honor after a 1.25 overall K/D across the series, going 1.22 on Hardpoint and 1.13 on Search and Destroy before that closing Overload performance.

FaZe Esports Sweep The Pit 3-0

FaZe Esports also finished 3-0, but the final score hides how close The Pit came to leveling this series.

Map 1: Hardpoint (SCAR)

FaZe's opener was never really in doubt. They won 250-171, out-killing The Pit 141-117 and out-damaging them 17,738 to 15,784. 04 had one of the standout individual maps of the day, going for 44 kills, a plus-17 differential and 5,421 damage. Abuzah, Drazah and Simp all cleared 30 kills of their own.

Map 2: Search & Destroy (Gridlock)

The Pit nearly stole the series here. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead before FaZe answered with five straight rounds to win it 6-5, a comeback that mirrored KOI's earlier in the day. Simp led FaZe with 11 kills, while The Pit's FDot put up 10 kills and three first bloods in a losing effort.

Map 3: Overload

This one came down to the wire too, with FaZe closing it out 4-3. Abuzah led with 38 kills, Simp added 35 and Drazah finished with 33. The Pit refused to fold, getting 37 kills from Mythix and 36 from FDot, but it was not quite enough to extend the series.

Match MVP: 04. 04 took the honor for his explosive Hardpoint opener, even though his numbers cooled off later in the series at 1.00 on Search and Destroy and 0.90 on Overload. That first map alone was enough to swing it his way.

G2 Esports Sweep Cloud9 3-0

G2 Esports became the third team to sweep on Day 1, and unlike the two series before it, this one did not need a late comeback to get there. G2 just played clean, disciplined Call of Duty from start to finish.

Map 1: Hardpoint (Gridlock)

The opener was the tightest map of the series. G2 edged it 250-227, with a slim 100-97 kill advantage and barely any separation in total damage, 13,354 to 13,053. Envoy led with 32 kills and 107 seconds of hill time, and Kremp added 28 kills.

Map 2: Search & Destroy (Raid)

This went more comfortably, 6-3, with Envoy, Nastie and Kremp all putting up eight kills apiece. Cloud9's Encourage topped the individual lobby with 11 kills, but nobody else on his team got going.

Map 3: Overload

G2 finished the sweep with a 6-1 win. Envoy was the story of the map, going for 36 kills, a plus-13 differential and two goals. Kremp added 32 kills and a plus-10 differential, and Nastie chipped in three goals of his own. Every Cloud9 player finished the map with a negative K/D.

Match MVP: Envoy. Envoy earned the nod after a series that only got better as it went, with a 1.28 K/D on Hardpoint, 1.60 on Search and Destroy and 1.57 on Overload.

Gentle Mates Sweep OMiT 3-0 to Set Up G2 Showdown

Gentle Mates joined the sweep club with a 3-0 win over OMiT, setting up an upper-bracket clash against G2 in the next round.

Map 1: Hardpoint (Sake)

This was the closest map of the series, and the only one that could have gone either way. Gentle Mates edged it 250-230 after the lead swung back and forth for most of the map, closing it out on the final hills. Estreal led with 38 kills and a plus-12 differential, JoeDeceives added 37 kills, and Sib controlled the objective with 148 seconds of hill time. OMiT's DKxrryy fought hard with 31 kills, but the rest of his roster could not keep pace.

Map 2: Search & Destroy (Raid)

This one went to Gentle Mates 6-4. Estreal kept rolling with 10 kills, Ghosty added eight, and JoeDeceives finished with nine kills and three first bloods. OMiT got solid contributions from DKxrryy and Denza but never strung enough rounds together.

Map 3: Overload

The most lopsided map of the series, a 6-1 win for Gentle Mates. Ghosty exploded for 30 kills and a 2.14 K/D, Estreal added 28 kills and a plus-10 differential, and Sib finished with 23 kills. Every OMiT player finished the map in the red.

Match MVP: Estreal. Estreal took the honor for a series that stayed consistent across every mode, finishing at 1.46 on Hardpoint, 1.67 on Search and Destroy and 1.56 overall.

Defending Champions OpTic Gaming Overcome Team WaR 3-1

OpTic Gaming got the toughest test of Day 1, and they were the only team of the six favorites that did not sweep.

Map 1: Hardpoint (Gridlock)

They opened well enough, taking this 250-152 behind 25 kills from Mercules, 24 from Huke, and a combined 45 from Dashy and Shotzzy.

Map 2: Search & Destroy (Raid)

Team WaR answered here, winning a tight 6-5 to hand OpTic their only map loss of the day. Shotzzy put up 12 kills in the loss, but Team WaR held their composure in the final round.

Map 3: Overload (SCAR)

OpTic needed to respond, and they did, taking this 5-3. Huke led with 30 kills and a plus-7 differential, Mercules added 29, and Dashy chipped in 27. Team WaR's Flames kept his team in it with 33 kills of his own, but it was not enough to level the series.

Map 4: Hardpoint (Hacienda)

The defending champions closed it out with another dominant Hardpoint, winning 250-216. Huke again led the way with 35 kills, Dashy added 32, and Shotzzy finished with 28 as OpTic slowly pulled away in the back half of the map.

Match MVP: Huke. Huke earned the honor for carrying OpTic through their response to the Search and Destroy loss, finishing at 1.18 on Hardpoint, 1.43 on Search and Destroy and 1.30 overall. Team WaR pushed the defending champions further than anyone else managed on Day 1, but OpTic's experience showed when it mattered.

100 Thieves Complete Day 1 with Sweep Over Boston Breach

The last match of Day 1 featured another tournament favorite, as 100 Thieves capped the evening by sweeping Boston Breach 3-0. While the scoreline suggests another routine victory, Boston made the final two maps far more competitive than the opener.

Map 1: Hardpoint (Sake)

100 Thieves opened with a 250-134 win. Scrap led with 29 kills, HyDra added 27 kills and 110 seconds of hill time, and Nium finished with 24 kills and a plus-11 differential. Boston struggled to get anywhere near the objective.

Map 2: Search & Destroy (Sake)

This was Boston's best map of the series, but they still lost it 6-5. HyDra led 100 Thieves with 12 kills, Nium added 11, and Boston's Afro matched HyDra with 12 kills of his own, though it was not enough to force a fourth map.

Map 3: Overload (Den)

Tighter than the final scoreline suggested, with 100 Thieves closing it out 4-3. Scrap put up 30 kills and a plus-7 differential, and HyDra added 27. Boston Breach got big performances from Afro (31 kills) and Spart (33 kills), but nobody else stepped up enough to extend the series.

Match MVP: Scrap. Scrap took the honor after leading the team through a dominant Hardpoint and a strong closing Overload, finishing at 1.32 on Hardpoint, 0.86 on Search and Destroy and 1.30 overall.

What's Next at Esports World Cup 2026?

With the opening round wrapped up, the bracket splits into upper and lower halves.

The upper bracket serves up two marquee matchups right away. FaZe Clan will face Movistar KOI after both teams opened with sweeps, and G2 Esports meets Gentle Mates in a battle between two undefeated rosters. Group B's headline matchup pits defending champions OpTic Gaming against 100 Thieves, with both organizations advancing out of the opening round. The rest of Group B's field gets settled by Team Heretics against Vancouver Surge and Team Falcons against Project Notorious.

The lower bracket does not offer second chances. The Pit EU faces Carolina Royal Ravens, Cloud9 takes on OMiT, and Team WaR meets Boston Breach, with every loser heading home from the Black Ops 7 tournament.

Day 1 largely belonged to the favorites, with five of the six opening series ending in sweeps. Only Team WaR managed to take a map from one of the tournament's heavyweights, pushing defending champions OpTic Gaming harder than anyone else. With blockbuster upper-bracket clashes including FaZe Clan vs. Movistar KOI, G2 Esports vs. Gentle Mates, and OpTic Gaming vs. 100 Thieves now on deck, Day 2 promises to be the tournament's biggest test yet.
