The wait is over. The Gears of War: E-Day multiplayer beta is going LIVE later today, giving players their first real hands-on look at The Coalition's next entry in the Xbox franchise ahead of its full launch on October 6, 2026.

  • North America 12pm PDT / 1pm MDT / 2pm CDT / 3pm EDT
  • UK/Ire 8pm BST
  • Europe 9pm CEST / 10pm EEST
  • Oceania 4am (Fri) JST / 3am (Fri) AWST / 5am (Fri) AEST
  • India 12:30am, Fri 7th Aug 2026 India Standard Time

Rather than one open window, Microsoft split the beta across two separate weekends. The first is gated behind early access, the second opens to everyone. Between the two, players get a shot at the brand-new Horde Siege mode, a batch of rewards that carry over into the full release, and a decent preview of where the multiplayer side of E-Day is heading.

Gears of War: E-Day Beta Schedule

Here's how the two weekends break down.

SessionDatesWho Can Play
Early Access Open BetaAugust 6 to August 10Pre-order holders, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass
Open BetaAugust 13 to August 17All eligible players, pre-order not required

So if you didn't pre-order and aren't subscribed to Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, you'll need to wait until the second weekend. Everyone gets in eventually, it's just a matter of when.

Accessing the Open Beta (Weekend 1, Early Access)

Where you download the Gears of War: E-Day Multiplayer Beta client depends on how you pre-ordered.

Xbox (Digital): If you pre-ordered on Xbox or through the Xbox app for PC, the Beta client should already be showing up for download today. Look under "My Games and Apps" on console or "My Library" in the PC app. If it's not there, search "Gears Beta" in the Store.

Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass: Early access is included with your membership. Search "Gears Beta" in Game Pass and download it from there.

Xbox (Physical & Collector's Edition): Pre-ordered a physical copy? Check your email from the retailer. For the Collector's Edition, whether you bought it on Xbox or Steam, a code should have been sent to you, so check your spam folder if you don't see it. If it's still missing, contact Xbox Game Studios Shop Customer Service first, before reaching out to the Gears community team. Once you have a code, redeem it at xbox.com/redeem.

Steam (Digital): The Beta client should already be sitting in your Steam Library as part of your pre-order.

Accessing the Open Beta (Weekend 2)

Weekend 2 opens things up to everyone, no pre-order needed. Search "Gears Beta" on Xbox, the Xbox app for PC, or Steam, and download it from there.

Do I need Game Pass to play?

Yes, if you're on Xbox Series X|S. You'll need at least a Game Pass Essentials membership to play online.

What's Actually Playable

The first weekend is built entirely around Horde Siege, an evolved take on Gears' cooperative Horde mode. Competitive multiplayer doesn't show up until weekend two, when 4v4 Versus modes join Horde Siege in the rotation.

Here's the full rundown of what's included across both weekends:

ContentBeta
Horde Siege maps1
Playable Horde classes4
Class progression capLevel 10
Invasion Bosses2
Versus modes (weekend two)2
Versus maps (weekend two)2
Weapon rosterFull
Player level capLevel 50
Medals to unlock5

Character customization is intentionally limited during the beta, with a handful of beta-exclusive cosmetics on top. It's a slice, not the whole game, and The Coalition seems fine with players knowing that going in.

How Much Bigger Is the Full Game?

Considerably. The final release scales things up across nearly every category that's capped in the beta. Players will get three Horde Siege maps instead of one, six Versus maps against the beta's two, and four Versus modes rather than two.

The achievement grind gets a lot deeper too. More than 80 medals will be available at launch, compared to five in the beta, and the level cap jumps from 50 all the way to 100 with four Re-Ups on top. Season One customization content arrives after launch, adding even more to chase once the beta wraps.

Exclusive Beta Rewards

Playing during either beta weekend unlocks cosmetics that carry over once the full game launches. The current list includes:

  • Blast Damage Mags Epic Character Skin
  • Crush the Bug Rare Weapon Skin Set
  • Crush the Bug Banner
  • Crush the Bug Emblem
  • KRYLL Weapon Icon
  • Medal
  • "First in the Fight" Player Title

These aren't handed out just for logging in. Players need to complete specific objectives during the beta weekends to earn them, so it's worth checking in-game challenges rather than assuming everything unlocks passively.

PC System Requirements

The Coalition also published official PC requirements alongside the beta launch. Here's the breakdown for both the minimum and recommended specs.

The beta also supports hardware ray tracing, HDR, ultrawide monitors, and a benchmark mode, alongside NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4, Intel XeSS 3.0, and TSR upscaling. That's a fairly generous spread of upscaling support for a beta build, which suggests The Coalition wants performance feedback across as many hardware configurations as possible before launch.

Gears Returns This October

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Set 14 years before the original Gears of War, the prequel follows a younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago through Emergence Day, the moment the Locust Horde first tears its way to the surface of Sera.

It's a story fans have heard referenced for years without ever actually playing through it, so there's real weight behind seeing it built out as a full game rather than backstory in a codex entry.

The Bottom Line

The Gears of War: E-Day beta runs across two weekends, Early Access from August 6 to 10 and Open Beta from August 13 to 17. Weekend one focuses on the new Horde Siege mode, while weekend two adds 4v4 Versus. Beta progress unlocks cosmetic rewards for the full game, which launches October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
