Moon Studios confirmed it during Sony's June State of Play, and it is a bigger deal than the audience it got: No Rest for the Wicked is leaving Early Access in October 2026. PS5 and PC get the 1.0 launch on the same day. Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2 are waiting on a date that has not been announced yet.
The game has been in Early Access on Steam since April 2024. That is two and a half years of patches, feedback loops, and gradual expansion. It has sold over 1.8 million copies during that window, which is not nothing for a game that has been genuinely difficult to recommend in its unfinished state. The October launch is the point where Moon Studios is finally saying it is done.
What Is No Rest for the Wicked
If you have not been following it, No Rest for the Wicked comes from Moon Studios, the team behind Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. The Ori games were gentle, beautiful platformers. This is not that. No Rest for the Wicked is a dark, isometric action RPG set on Isola Sacra, an island consumed by a plague that is turning its people into monsters. You play as a Cerim, a holy warrior sent to investigate.
The combat is slower and heavier than you might expect from the genre. This is not Diablo. Every fight has weight to it, weapons have stamina costs, and positioning matters in a way that pushes it closer to a Souls game than a hack-and-slash. The visual style is one of the most distinctive things about it: painterly and grotesque at the same time, with distorted creature designs that feel genuinely unsettling rather than just generically dark.
The map is handcrafted rather than procedurally generated, which is an intentional statement for a genre where randomized dungeons are the default. Moon Studios has leaned hard into that as a selling point since the beginning.
What 1.0 Actually Adds
The 1.0 release is not a rebrand of what already exists. Moon Studios is shipping 60 hours of new content on top of what Early Access players have had access to, bringing the total potential playtime to over 100 hours. That is a substantial addition.
The big ticket items for 1.0:
New regions: The full game will include over 15 handcrafted regions. Early Access covered a portion of Isola Sacra. The 1.0 launch fills out the rest of the map, including the final arc of the story.
Reworked class and progression system: Moon Studios is overhauling how players build their Cerim warrior. The new system is designed to give more flexibility in combat style without the Early Access version's more rigid constraints.
Horde mode: A new mode built for replayability after the main campaign. No details on how it works yet beyond the name.
New bosses, enemies, and weapons: Standard for a major update but confirmed explicitly in the announcement.
Crossplay and cross-save: The 1.0 release brings crossplay between PS5 and PC, and cross-save so progress moves between platforms. Four-player co-op is also confirmed for the full release, with persistent multiplayer that keeps the world evolving even when the host is offline.
Moon Studios has not announced the exact October date yet. They confirmed the month at State of Play but have held back the specific day. Expect that to come closer to launch.
The PS5 Launch and Why It Matters
The PS5 version was not a given. Back in 2025, Moon Studios CEO Thomas Mahler was pretty candid about the platform situation on Discord. He said the team was looking at numbers and PS5 made the most sense as a console target, but nothing was official. He also said they would ship on all platforms eventually, but not necessarily at the same time.
That turned out to be exactly what happened. PS5 and PC get October 2026. Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2 are confirmed as future targets but have no date.
The Xbox delay has a specific reason behind it. Microsoft requires games to launch on both Series X and Series S simultaneously. The Series S is significantly less powerful, and Moon Studios has not cleared the optimization work needed to hit both machines at launch. It is the same wall that caught Baldur's Gate 3 during its console rollout. Moon Studios decided not to wait on Xbox and moved forward with PS5 first.
For PS5 players who have been holding out, this is the version to wait for. The trailer shown at State of Play was captured on PS5, and the studio has been open about the fact that it is their lead console platform.
The Founders Pack: What Early Buyers Get
Moon Studios is rewarding people who have been in since Early Access, and also giving PS5 players a way to get the same rewards through pre-order.
The Founders Pack activates when 1.0 launches and includes:
Spirit Cavern: An exclusive handcrafted hideout inside the game world. Moon Studios describes it as a home base that bridges both worlds, tied to the studio's legacy. It is only available to Founders and will not be purchasable or earnable by other means.
Sayer's Vow: A unique sword embedded in a stone inside Isola Sacra. Only players with the Founders Pack can pull it out. Everyone else in the world can see it. No one else can take it.
Founders Tag: A cosmetic tag that marks Founders in-game and in multiplayer.
Beta Test Realm access: An exclusive post-launch test environment reserved for Founders, giving early access to upcoming content before it goes live.
The deadline for PC players to qualify is July 10, 2026. Purchase the game on Steam before that date and the Founders Pack is added automatically at no extra cost when 1.0 launches. The game is currently discounted 30 percent on Steam, so the window to get in early and save some money is open right now.
PS5 players qualify by pre-ordering before launch day. No cutoff date has been announced for that side yet, but Moon Studios has indicated it mirrors the Early Access spirit of the PC offer.
Why This Announcement Got Buried
The State of Play that revealed No Rest for the Wicked 1.0 also revealed God of War Laufey, confirmed Marvel's Wolverine for September 15, and gave Until Dawn 2 its world premiere. In that context, a two-and-a-half-year Early Access game exiting to 1.0 was always going to get less column space than it deserved.
But the audience for this game is real and has been patient. The Early Access community shaped what 1.0 became. Moon Studios ran an unusually transparent development process: Mahler posted regularly on social media about design decisions, technical hurdles, and platform discussions in a way that kept players invested even during the stretches where updates were slow. That kind of relationship with a player base does not disappear when coverage moves on to the next announcement.
The 1.8 million Early Access sales number is the clearest evidence of that. For a game that was intentionally hard, intentionally incomplete, and actively asking players to wait for it to be finished, 1.8 million copies is a serious result.
Should You Play It Now or Wait for 1.0
This question is worth answering directly, because the 30 percent Steam discount makes it tempting to jump in today.
If you want the Founders Pack rewards and you are a PC player, buying before July 10 is the move. The discount sweetens it. But go in knowing the current Early Access version is not the finished product. The story ends mid-way through the full arc, and some of the systems that are getting overhauled for 1.0 feel rough in their current state. You are paying to play a work in progress and get early adopter rewards, not to play the complete game.
If you are a PS5 player or someone who prefers to play finished games, wait for October. The 1.0 version is what Moon Studios has been building toward since launch. It has a complete story, a rebuilt progression system, and crossplay if you want to bring in PC friends.
Xbox players do not have a choice right now. There is no timeline for Series X/S. Follow Moon Studios on social media and check back closer to the end of 2026, but do not hold your breath for a simultaneous window.
What to Expect Before October
Moon Studios has not announced a specific release date yet, only the month. Expect a full date reveal sometime in August or September. The studio typically follows its announcements with developer update posts and social media previews of upcoming content, so the next few months should bring more detail on what the new regions look like, how the new class system works, and what the horde mode actually involves.
The PS5 pre-order page is live. If you want to lock in the Founders Pack on console, that is where to go.
No Rest for the Wicked launches on PS5 and PC in October 2026. Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 versions are in development with no confirmed window.
