CDL Major IV Day 2 Preview: LA Thieves vs FaZe, OpTic vs G2, and Gentle Mates' Season on the Line

Day 1 of CDL Major IV did exactly what everyone expected. The four teams with nothing left to play for this season lost, went home, and freed up the bracket for the teams that actually matter. Carolina Royal Ravens, Cloud9 New York, Riyadh Falcons, and Vancouver Surge are all eliminated. That sound you hear is the tournament finally getting interesting.

Today is Day 2, and the matches are considerably harder to call. Two upper bracket semifinals, one lower bracket match with home crowd implications, and two lower bracket rounds that will decide which teams even make it to Sunday. Here is everything happening on Saturday, June 27, in Paris.

Day 1 Recap: What Happened and Why It Matters

LA Thieves swept Carolina Royal Ravens 3-0, adding to what is now a 14-match win streak that has broken the all-time CDL record previously held by Atlanta FaZe twice over. The sweep was clinical: a 250-129 Hardpoint on Den, a 6-4 Search and Destroy on Fringe, and an 8-0 Overload win on Den that basically said everything about the gap between these two rosters right now.

FaZe Vegas came from behind to beat Paris Gentle Mates 3-1, which was probably the most interesting match of the day. Gentle Mates won the opening Hardpoint on Sake, the home crowd was electric, and for about 20 minutes it looked like this could be one of those upsets. Then FaZe settled in, took Search and Destroy on Fringe 6-3, won a tight Overload on Scar 5-4, and closed it out on Scar Hardpoint 250-207. Gentle Mates head to the lower bracket.

G2 Minnesota nearly threw it away against Riyadh Falcons, going up 2-0 before allowing Riyadh to claw back to 2-2. Minnesota eventually held on in the fifth map to win 3-2, but the wobble was not a good look for a team that needs momentum heading into the upper bracket semifinals against OpTic Texas today. Riyadh dropped to the lower bracket, where they were then immediately swept 3-0 by Toronto KOI. Riyadh is out. KOI, meanwhile, is sitting in the lower bracket quarterfinals looking like a team with a plan.

OpTic Texas beat Boston Breach 3-1, which is fine, but OpTic did not look particularly comfortable doing it. Boston pushed them to four maps, won a Search and Destroy, and made OpTic work for it. That might not matter against Breach. It will matter against G2.

Match 1: Miami Heretics vs Paris Gentle Mates (Lower Bracket Round 2)

This one kicks things off at 8:00 AM EDT, and it is the only match today where both teams are genuinely fighting for tournament survival. Lose this and you are out of the bracket entirely. Win and you get a lower bracket quarterfinal against whoever falls out of OpTic vs G2.

Gentle Mates carry all the emotional weight here. This is their home event, hosted by their own organization at La Defense Arena in Paris. The crowd was already behind them yesterday when they jumped out to a 1-0 lead against FaZe before the match slipped away. Another early lead today against Heretics and this arena will be extremely loud.

The problem for Gentle Mates is that momentum and noise do not make up for a roster that has been inconsistent all season. The Envoy-Estreal swap happened four weeks ago, and while the new lineup has flashes, the team has not clicked into a reliable system yet. They nearly pulled off an upset against FaZe but ran out of answers after the first map.

Miami Heretics, on the other hand, are a team that started this season looking dangerous and gradually fell apart. Their early-season pace and chaos was a joy to watch, but more structured opponents have dismantled them repeatedly since the midpoint. Their qualifier results were poor, they had roster changes that raised more questions than they answered, and they arrive here with limited ceiling and significant uncertainty.

This should be a close match for at least the first two or three maps. Gentle Mates on home soil in an elimination game is not the same team you saw lose to FaZe in the upper bracket. Prediction: Gentle Mates win 3-1, but it will not be comfortable. The Paris crowd is going to have a lot to say about map two.

Match 2: OpTic Texas vs G2 Minnesota (Upper Bracket Semifinal)

This is the match of the day, and it is a rematch of their Major III upper bracket round one, which OpTic won on the way to another runner-up finish. OpTic tops the overall season standings. They have finished second in every Major this year. They have the talent. They just cannot win the thing when it counts.

G2 Minnesota are a different problem than Boston Breach. They are structured, composed, and experienced. Their 3-2 win over Riyadh yesterday was sloppy, and they will know it. But G2 have shown all year that they can adapt between maps in ways that catch opponents off guard. Going up 2-0 and then allowing it to get to 2-2 before recovering is concerning, but it also tells you they did not panic. That matters in a five-map series against OpTic.

OpTic's issue is well documented at this point. They have been the consistent second-best team in the CDL all year. Every major, every qualifier, they compete deep into the bracket and then fall short. The talent is not the problem. aBeZy, HyDra, and the rest of the squad are among the most skilled players in the league. The mental side of late-stage matches is where things have broken down repeatedly.

If OpTic can get out to a fast start and take Search and Destroy early, they have the tools to close this out. G2 will need the series to go long. Prediction: OpTic Texas win 3-2, but this could easily go the other way. If G2 take map one, watch out.

Match 3: LA Thieves vs FaZe Vegas (Upper Bracket Semifinal)

LA Thieves are on a 14-match win streak that has shattered the all-time CDL record. FaZe Vegas beat them zero times in the three chances they had this season. On paper, this should be the most one-sided semifinal you could schedule.

But FaZe Vegas are not a team to dismiss. They showed real composure against Gentle Mates yesterday, coming from behind after losing the first map in a hostile home crowd environment to win three straight. Simp, Cellium, and the rest of this roster have a ceiling that, when they hit it, can beat anyone on the day. The question is whether they can find it against a team that has been functionally unbeatable for months.

LA Thieves' win streak includes three victories against FaZe specifically. If there is a team in this bracket that has already tried and failed to figure out a counter, it is FaZe. They know exactly what the problem is. Whether they have solved it is another matter.

aBeZy is having one of the best individual performances of any player in CDL history right now. During the Major III run, rookie Nium also set a record for rookie performance that previously belonged to aBeZy himself. This is a team operating at a level the rest of the bracket has not been able to match all year. Prediction: LA Thieves win 3-1. FaZe take a map because they are FaZe and they always find something. But Thieves advance.

Matches 4 and 5: Lower Bracket Quarterfinals

These two matches depend entirely on what happens in the upper bracket semifinals. The structure is straightforward. The winner of Miami Heretics vs Paris Gentle Mates advances to face the loser of G2 Minnesota vs OpTic Texas in the first lower bracket quarterfinal. Toronto KOI, meanwhile, await the loser of LA Thieves vs FaZe Vegas in the second lower bracket quarterfinal.

Toronto KOI have had a quietly impressive Day 1. They swept Riyadh Falcons 3-0 after their Day 1 bye, which is the kind of clean performance you want from a lower bracket team preparing for elimination matches. KOI lost star player JoeDeceives mid-season, which genuinely hurt them, but CleanX and Kips have been putting up numbers and the team still has enough to cause problems for a fatigued upper bracket team dropping down.

If OpTic lose to G2, they will face the winner of Miami Heretics vs Paris Gentle Mates. Toronto KOI are waiting on the loser of LA Thieves vs FaZe Vegas in the other lower bracket quarterfinal. OpTic in elimination games in the lower bracket is a different proposition than OpTic in the upper bracket. They tend to find another gear when their backs are against the wall. KOI will have to be at their absolute best to put OpTic out here.

If FaZe lose to LA Thieves, they immediately drop into a lower bracket quarterfinal against Toronto KOI. FaZe in the lower bracket are also historically dangerous. Either path through the lower bracket today sets up a genuinely interesting Sunday.

What Sunday Looks Like From Here

The most likely final four heading into Sunday is LA Thieves, OpTic Texas, and two teams emerging from the lower bracket. If everything goes chalk today, the grand final is LA Thieves against OpTic Texas in a best-of-seven. That would be the fourth time these two teams have met in a Major final this year. OpTic has lost all three of those.

The more interesting scenario is one where FaZe makes it back through the lower bracket to reach the grand final. It would require them to beat whatever comes through the lower bracket quarterfinals, beat a fresh OpTic or G2, and then beat LA Thieves again in the final. That is a long road. But FaZe have been to finals before, and Simp in a high-pressure single-elimination environment is genuinely unpredictable.

For Gentle Mates, the goal is simpler. Win today, stay alive, make Sunday in front of your home crowd. The bracket beyond that is almost secondary compared to what it would mean for this organization to compete on Sunday in Paris.
